May 2020 Visitor Counts

May 2020 was greatly impacted by shutdowns related to COVID-19 albeit slightly less so than April.

All Arrivals

May visitation decreased year-over-year in all sectors, resulting in a total decrease of 91.2% in passengers over the same month last year.

May’s total in-bound passengers = 7.017, down from last year @ 80,055.  May 2020 was below the three-year average of 58,714 by 88.1%. May was below the five-year average of 71,848 by 90.2% and the ten-year average of 75,382 by 90.7%.

Arrivals by Sea

People arriving by sea, including private boaters, was 6,275 for the month of May which was down 91.8% from 76,876 last year.

• May Cross Channel passenger counts were down 91.8% year-over-year @ 4,571
• 1995 had the highest volume for the month @ 73,288 passengers
• 2020 had the lowest volume for the month @ 4,571 passengers
• May Cross Channel passenger counts were below the three-year average of 56,558 by 88.9%
• Cross Channel Carriers made up 65.14% of total monthly arrivals

• Cruise passenger counts were down 100% year-over-year @ 0
• The number of Cruise Ships calling on Avalon was down @ 0 vs. 7 in 2019
• 2005 had the highest passenger volume for the month @ 28,703
• 2020 had the lowest passenger volume for the month @ 0
• May passenger counts were below the three-year average of 12,974 by 100%
• Cruise passengers made up 0% of total monthly arrivals

• Private Boater passenger counts were down year-over-year by 54.7% @ 1,704
• 2011 had the highest volume for the month @ 5,012
• 2020 had the lowest volume month @ 1,704
• May passenger counts were below the three-year average of 3,435 by 50.4%
• May number of boats on anchors was down 23% @ 67
• May number of boats on moorings was down 54.7% @ 426
• Private Boaters Made up 24.28% of total monthly arrivals

Avalon's combined in-bound air passenger counts for May totaled 742, down by 76.9% from 2019.  

• People aboard planes (Airport in the Sky) was down 53.2% from 1,392
• 2014 had the highest volume of private aircraft passenger counts for the month @ 1,818
• 2020 had the lowest volume of private aircraft passenger counts for the month @ 651
• May counts were below the three-year average of 2,208 by 66.4%
• May people aboard planes made up 9.28% of total monthly arrivals

• People aboard Charter Helicopters was down year-over-year by 94.9% @ 91
• 2019 had the highest volume for the month @ 1,787
• 2020 had the lowest volume for the month @ 91
• May counts were below the three-year average of 1,211 by 92.5%
• May people aboard Helicopters made up 1.3% of total monthly arrivals

Year-to-Date

• Total arrivals year-to-date was down @ 141,118 or 56.8% from last year
• Total arrivals year-to-date fell below the three, five and ten year averages
