Hook a big one! Fishing has long been a favorite pastime of visitors and residents alike on Catalina Island. Options for hooking the big one include renting a boat and heading out on your own, going out on a fishing charter or dropping your line off Avalon’s Green Pleasure Pier. Schools of mackerel, sardines and smelt are abundant around the island and attract larger sport fish, like Yellowtail and White Sea Bass. When pier fishing, be sure to stay clear of the Garibaldi, the bright orange fish that's visible around the harbor, it has protected status and is California's State Marine Fish. Catalina Island has several Marine Protected Areas which prohibit fishing, including the Casino Point Dive Park area and Lover's Cove, but there are still many other spots to choose from. A California fishing license is required for anyone 16 years and older unless you are fishing off a pier. Pier fishing does not require a license for any age. Fishing licenses can be obtained online through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or in person in Avalon at the Catalina Coastal Tours / Jet Ski Rentals office located at 103 Sumner Ave or at Joe's Tackle Box adjacent to Joe's Rent-A-Boat located on the Green Pleasure Pier.  

During summer months, the City of Avalon hosts a Kids Fishing Derby, on Wednesday mornings from 7-9 am. Prizes are given. The event is open to all children age 0-17. Participants do need to provide their own equipment.
