July 2020 Visitor Counts

July 2020 was greatly impacted by COVID-19, though far less than the months of March – June.

All Arrivals

July visitation decreased year-over-year in all but one sector, resulting in a total decrease of 56.7% in passengers over the same month last year.

July’s total in-bound passengers = 63,240, down 56.7% from last year @ 146,219.  July 2020 was below the three-year average of 119,527 by 47.1%. July was below the five-year average of 129,562 by 51.2% and the ten-year average of 125,627 by 49.7%.

Arrivals by Sea

People arriving by sea, including private boaters, was 59,803 for the month of July, down 57.8% from 141,664 last year.

• July Cross Channel passenger counts were down 51.9% year-over-year @ 50,135
• 2000 had the highest volume for the month @ 117,097 passengers
• 2020 had the lowest volume for the month @ 50,135 passengers
• July Cross Channel passenger counts were below the three-year average of 87,576 by 42.8%
• Cross Channel Carriers made up 79.28% of total monthly arrivals

• Cruise passenger counts were down 100% year-over-year @ 0
• The number of Cruise Ships calling on Avalon was down @ 0 vs. 10 in 2019
• 2019 had the highest passenger volume for the month @ 27,614
• 2020 had the lowest passenger volume for the month @ 0
• July passenger counts were below the three-year average of 18,108 by 100%
• Cruise passengers made up 0% of total monthly arrivals

• Private Boater passenger counts were down year-over-year by 1.0% @ 9,668
• 2019 had the highest volume for the month @ 9,768
• 2014 had the lowest volume month @ 8,084
• July passenger counts were below the three-year average of 9,709 by .4%
• July number of boats on anchors was down 37.1% @ 129
• July number of boats on moorings was down 1.0% @ 2,417
• Private Boaters Made up 15.29% of total monthly arrivals

Arrivals by Air

Combined in-bound air passenger counts for July totaled 3,607, down by 22.9% from 2019.  

• People aboard planes (Airport in the Sky) was up 10.5% from 2,337 in 2019
• 2020 had the highest volume of private aircraft passenger counts for the month @ 2,583
• 2010 had the lowest volume of private aircraft passenger counts for the month @ 1,485
• July counts were above the three-year average of 2,301 by 12.3%
• July people aboard planes made up 4.08% of total monthly arrivals

• People aboard Charter Helicopters was down year-over-year by 61.5% @ 854
• 2017 had the highest volume for the month @ 3,025
• 2020 had the lowest volume for the month @ 854
• July counts were below the three-year average of 1,833 by 53.4%
• July people aboard Helicopters made up 1.35% of total monthly arrivals

Year-to-Date

• Total arrivals year-to-date was down 59.3% from last year @ 236,291 or -344,853 visitors
• Total arrivals year-to-date fell below the three, five and ten year averages
