Avalon, California:

The City of Avalon is proud to announce the installation of Epicenter, a traveling ocean exhibition by acclaimed Laguna Beach sculptor Casey Parlette, now on display at Old Ben Park adjacent to Avalon Bay through the first week of January 2026.

Standing 11 feet tall and forged from stainless steel and bronze, Epicenter invites visitors to step inside a spiraling journey through ocean life—from mussels and abalone to the graceful motion of kelp and the sleek form of a leopard shark. The sculpture captures the interconnectedness of all marine species and celebrates the beauty and resilience of California’s coastal ecosystems.

This installation marks a meaningful collaboration between Casey Parlette, the City of Avalon, and the Marine Protected Area (MPA) Collaborative Network. Together, these partners are advancing ocean conservation education, dialogue, and action - a shared mission deeply connected to Avalon’s stewardship of its surrounding waters.

Avalon is home to two Marine Protected Areas:

Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) – One of California’s most iconic dive parks, offering a sanctuary for vibrant marine life and a popular site for underwater exploration and education.

Lover’s Cove State Marine Conservation Area – Known for its crystal-clear waters, and abundant fish populations, providing a refuge where visitors can experience the health of a thriving ocean ecosystem firsthand.

“Epicenter provides a powerful reminder of the living world beneath the waves and the importance of protecting it for future generations,” said Mayor Anni Marshall. “We are thrilled to host this stunning piece in Avalon, where art and conservation meet organically.”

An art opening and community discussion on Avalon’s Marine Protected Areas will be held at Old Ben Park on Sunday, October 19th at 3:00 pm featuring artist Casey Parlette and representatives from the MPA Collaborative Network. The public is warmly invited to attend and join the conversation about the ongoing work to protect Santa Catalina Island’s unique marine environments.
