Catalina Island Hosts More Than Pink Events
September 14-15, 2024

In partnership with the Susan G Komen, Catalina Island residents and visitors are invited to join in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer, by joining in the More Than Pink Walk, Paddle and Mammogram events.

On Saturday, September 14, starting at noon, simultaneous Walk and Paddle Board events will initiate.  Walkers will convene just west of Wrigley Stage and paddlers will convene at the swim line, adjacently.  After some brief announcements, walkers will move toward the Catalina Casino, making a loop of the building then returning through town to the Cabrillo Mole, then looping back to the stage. Stand Up Paddle Boarders will follow just off shore in a simultaneous waterborne activation.

All participants are encouraged to dress in supportive attire, carry some pink pom poms or ribbons and engage with those they pass on the street by chanting “We're here to fight Cancer." Breast cancer survivors and fighters generally wear bright pink for such an event.  At the end of the walk/paddle, participants will be asked to join in a group photo.

Interested participants should register at komen.org/catalinawalkandpaddle, or by using the QR code on flyers posted around town.  Team and individual participation is encouraged.

“We are thrilled to join the Catalina Island community for the More Than Pink Walk & Paddle this year, where together we can make a profound impact in the fight against breast cancer,” said Yolanda Van Dyke, Executive Director of Susan G Komen Los Angeles.  “Supporting individuals in our community who are facing breast cancer is essential to our mission, but we cannot do it alone. This year’s Walk & Paddle is not just an event; it is a pivotal moment to raise awareness, provide mammograms to those in this community and secure vital funds that will make equitable care available to all.  We hope you can join us as we take a powerful stand against this devastating disease.”

Catalina Island Health in conjunction with Alinea will be offering Mammography in a private setting at a mobile unit that will be stationed on Crescent Avenue close to Bluewater Avalon. For appointments or to determine if you are eligible for a free screening, go to alineamed.com/catalina.  A QR code for appointments is also available on posted flyers.  Screenings will be offered between 9 am and 5 pm both Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15, 2024.

Sponsors of the event include: the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Catalina Island Health, California Department of Health, Love Catalina Island Tourism Authority and Alinea Medical Imaging, with additional support from the CIty of Avalon, Hotel Metropole and Catalina Xtreme Parasail.
