Tips & Information

  • How to Plan for Your Third Night Free on Catalina Island

Want to stay for free on Catalina Island?

For the next several months, you can do just that. The Third Night Free on Catalina Island promotion organized by Love Catalina Island provides an unprecedented opportunity to stay two mid-week nights and get the third night free.

With more than a dozen properties taking part in the Third Night Free on Catalina Island promotion, island visitors have a wealth of accommodations options, ranging from boutique hotels to historic homes and from classic Catalina Island accommodations to some of the newest properties on the island. Explore the options and begin planning your free Catalina Island stay. Expiration dates and exclusions vary by property, so be sure to read the fine print.

Where to stay in Avalon is just the first of many intriguing decisions to be made for your southern California staycation. Once you decide where you’ll be staying, your next step should be deciding how to get to Catalina Island. The main options include helicopter and Catalina Island passenger ferry, but private boat and private plane are also options.

Catalina Express, which offers service from Long Beach, Dana Point and San Pedro, as well as Catalina Flyer, which offers service from Newport Beach, have reduced their capacity at this time to comply with social distancing mandates. That reduced capacity has made advance reservations essential. At this time, like everywhere on Catalina Island – and the state of California – the island’s transportation providers require face coverings at all times.

Catalina Island HikingCatalina Island offers myriad activities and adventures

With four days on the island, visitors will have time to roam wild, experiencing many of Catalina Island ’s activities and adventures. Visitors will have no trouble filling their days with exciting things to do – or filling their days with nothing but relaxation.

Catalina Island’s pristine waters provide the perfect opportunity for social distancing. Paddleboards, pedal boats and kayaks lure novices and expert paddlers alike to explore the ocean environment near Avalon. Rental skiffs encourage exploration along the coastline. And scuba and snorkeling are two fascinating ways to experience the wonder underwater, in one of the most popular dive destinations in North America.

Your three nights on the island will allow for plenty of time for terrestrial pursuits as well. Spectacular scenery and unique wildlife make hiking on Catalina Island irresistible. Visit the Catalina Island Conservancy's Trailhead in Avalon for hiking permits, trail maps and information about what to expect. Mountain bike enthusiasts will find that the island provides an ideal environment for two-wheeled fun as well.

Don’t forget to spend some time soaking in the seaside charms of Avalon, which reminds many of Italy’s picturesque coastal villages. Stroll along the waterfront and take advantage of the myriad Instagram-worthy views to show off your perfect California vacation. The city’s shops and boutiques offer an opportunity to discover an array of treasures to take home. Biking in Avalon is also popular, bring your own bike or they can be rented on the island for the day. One of the most popular Avalon activities continues to be golf carts, which can be rented by the hour for a self-guided tour around town.

Reserving your chosen activities on-line before your arrival will help assure availability during these times of reduced capacity; most of the things to do on Catalina Island can be booked in advance.

Catalina Island RestaurantsWhere to dine on Catalina Island

Although current restrictions may have changed the way you dine on Catalina, the island’s restaurants have adapted with creativity and perseverance. Several Avalon restaurants are offering dining on the beach, creating a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to eat – and drink – on Catalina Island’s beaches. Beach and patio dining is available for both lunch and dinner. Restaurants on Catalina Island are also offering meals to go, allowing you to plan a picnic or in-room dining. Catalina Taxi & Tours offers delivery as does Catalina Island Eats.

No matter how you spend your Third Night Free on Catalina Island, your time here will be a welcome escape from the pressures of everyday life on the mainland.

  • Navigating Your Catalina Island Getaway

    What's New with Catalina Island

Face coverings and social distancing are required in LA County and Catalina Island. If you're traveling to Catalina Island via the ferry or the helicopter, you'll be asked to wear a face covering in the terminal and the entire way over to Catalina Island. Ferries are operating at a limited capacity, to allow for social distancing and cleaning, so you're asked to make reservations at least 24 hours in advance, perhaps more on weekends. With fewer travelers, there's room to spread out. Get outside and enjoy the fresh ocean air on your journey over. Enjoy your favorite cocktail on the ride, like Catalina Express' famous Bloody Mary.

Once you arrive on the island, whether at the ferry terminal, heli pad or Green Pleasure Pier, you'll notice social distance markers and signs asking for face coverings to be worn. Shops, beaches, the Green Pleasure Pier, restaurants and activities are open. Face coverings are required along Crescent Avenue, along Casino Way, in shops, restaurants and activities; anywhere you're around others. If sitting at the beach, you should stay with your group and maintain 6 feet distance from those not in your group. The waterfront is open for swimming, sand castle building, frolicking and water sports.

Outdoor Dining on Catalina IslandLos Angeles County mandates call for restaurants to utilize outdoor dining and take out. Just a handful of our restaurants are closed. You'll find the majority  of our restaurants are open with new fun outdoor dining options. Luau Larry's, home of the Wiki Wacker, NDMK Fish House and Coyote Joe's are operating in the evenings on South Beach while Maggie's Blue Rose,  Steve's Steakhouse & Seafood and El Galleon are operating in the evenings on Middle Beach. Descanso Beach Club is open for lunch daily and is serving dinner on weekends. The new restaurant at the Holiday Inn Resort, The Cove Bar & Grill, has opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is offering poolside patio dining. Antonio's Cabaret is now serving breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner on its ocean front patio. The expansive patio at the Metropole Marketplace gives diners a place to enjoy open air meals from Coney Island West, Three Palms, Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., Cafe Metropole and the M Restaurant. Restaurants operating on the beach start serving at 5 pm. Beach goers are asked to move to the beach area below the seawall at that time.

Tours and Activities are operating with fewer guests to allow for social distancing. There are so many options for guests to enjoy. Take a hummer tour and explore Catalina Island's vast interior. Get some air and catch the views on a parasail excursion. Rent a golf cart and explore the hills and winding roads around Avalon. Rent a kayak or SUP, or snorkel at Lovers Cove. Fly through the air on the Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour. Swing from the trees on the Catalina Aerial Adventure. Play a round of mini golf.

Hotel AtwaterHotels, bed and breakfast inns and vacation rental companies are welcoming visitors. New things offered are touch-less check-in, enhanced cleaning protocols and delivered breakfast in lieu of a buffet. Due to state and county mandates, pools, spas and fitness centers may not be available at this time. Check with your accommodations for specific updates.

We look forward to welcoming you to beautiful Catalina Island!everyday life on the mainland.
