June 2021 Visitor Counts

June continued to show significant signs of recovery from COVID-19 related closures. 

All Arrivals

June visitation increased year-over-year in all sectors, except cruise visitors, resulting in an overall increase by 201% or 64,275 visitors over the same month last year. 

Previous June tracking (below) offers a comparison without COVID-19 impacts.  June 2021’s total of 96,208 fell short of June 2019’s total arrivals of 108,265.

June’s total in-bound passengers = 96.208, up from last year @ 31,933.  June 2021 was above the three, five and ten-year averages. June 2021 trailed June 2019 by 12,057 visitors. 

Arrivals by Sea

Passengers arriving by sea, including private boaters, was 91,973 for the month of June, up by 61,587 from 30,384 last year.

• June Cross Channel passenger counts were up year-over-year @ 84,723 vs. 23,736 last year
• 2000 had the highest volume for the month @ 88,446 passengers
• 2020 had the lowest volume for the month @ 23,730. Pre-COVID-19 the lowest count for the month was in 2009 @ 48,245
• 2019 had 76,797 Cross Channel passengers or 7,926 fewer passengers than 2021
• June Cross Channel passenger counts were above the three-year average of 61,752 by 37.2%
• June Cross Channel passenger counts were above the five-year and ten-year averages of 69,399 and 70,757 respectively
• Cross Channel Carriers made up 88.06% of total monthly arrivals

• Cruise passenger counts were down for the second year @ 0
• 2009 had the highest Cruise passenger volume for the month @ 35,062
• 2021 tied with 2020 as the lowest Cruise passenger volume for the month @ 0.  Previous low was 1991 @ 9,856
• 2019 June Cruise passenger counts totaled 22,045
• June Cruise passenger counts were below the three-year average of 7,348
• June Cruise passengers counts were below the five-year and ten-year averages of 12,957 and 15,760 respectively
• Cruise passengers made up 0% of total monthly arrivals
• The number of Cruise Ships calling on Avalon was 0
• All years on record prior to 2020 had 8 ships in June

• Private Boater passenger counts were up year-over-year by 602 @ 7,250
• 2017 had the highest passenger volume for the month @ 7,256
• 2015 had the lowest passenger volume month @ 5,140. 
• June private boater passenger counts were above the three-year average of 6,921 by 4.8%
• June private boater passenger counts were above the five-year and ten-year average by 3.9% and 14.9% respectively
• June’s number of boats on anchor was down by 31.3% @ 79 vs. 115 last year
• 2018 had the highest number of vessels anchored @ 207
• 2012 had the lowest number of vessels anchored @ 34
• June’s number of boats on moorings was up @ 1,810 vs. 1,662 last year
• 2017 had the highest number of vessels on moorings @ 1,814
• 2015 had the lowest number of vessels on moorings @ 1,285
• Private Boaters Made up 7.53% of total monthly arrivals

 Arrivals by Air

Combined in-bound air passenger counts for June totaled 4,444, up from 1,602 in 2020.

• People aboard planes (Airport in the Sky) was up @ 2,157 from 936 last year
• 2021 had the highest volume of private aircraft passengers for the month
• 2020 had the lowest volume of private aircraft passengers for the month.  The prior lowest count was in 2019 @ 1,044
• June counts for people aboard planes was above the three-year average of 1,379 by 56.4%
• June counts for people aboard planes was above the five-year and ten-year averages by 55.6% and 45.2% respectively
• June people aboard planes made up 2.24% of total monthly arrivals

• People aboard Charter Helicopters was up year-over-year @ 2,078 vs. 613 
• 2021 had the highest volume for the month
• 2020 had the lowest volume for the month.  Previous low for month was 1,141 in 2009
• June counts for people aboard helicopters was above the three-year average of 1,402 by 48.2%
• June counts for people aboard helicopters was above the five-year and ten-year averages by 31.8% and 28.5% respectively
• June people aboard Helicopters made up 2.15% of total monthly arrivals

Year-to-Date

Total year-to-date arrivals are up from last year

• Total Arrivals year-to-date was up 82.9% from last year @ 316,454 vs. 173,051 or a difference of 143,403 visitors
• Total Arrivals year-to-date exceeded the three year average by 308,143
• Total Arrivals year-to-date were below the five and ten year averages by 15.3% and 20.7% respectively
• All arrival sectors are up year-to date except for Cruise

Year-to-Date--Historical

• 2017 had the highest total visitation year-to-date @ 477,054
• Compared to 2017, year-to-date total arrivals are down by 160,600
• 2019 had 434,925 visitors year-to-date
• Compared to 2019, year-to-date total arrivals are down by 118,471 people
• Cross Channel and Cruise arrivals are down year-to-date compared to 2019 while Private Boat, Private Aircraft and Helicopter arrivals are up.

Catalina Island Visitor Center

• Number of calls for the month was up year-over-year by 26.1% @ 1,174 vs. 931
• 2008 had the highest volume for the month @ 2,318 calls
• 2016 had the lowest volume for the month @ 314 calls
• June call counts were below the three-year average of 1,054 by 11.3%
• Number of Walk-Ins for the month was up year-over-year @ 3,199 vs. 93. 
• 2018 had the highest volume of walk-ins for the month @ 8,597 guests
• 2020 had the lowest volume of walk-ins for the month @ 93 guests
• June Walk-In counts were above the three-year average of 2,111 by 51.5%
